SOUPer Meals

I love soup…year-round.

Whether it’s a hearty, filling meal for days when you need something substantial, a spicy option that wakes up your senses, or a gentle, soothing bowl for days when your gut needs extra care, soup always fits. There’s even evidence that chicken soup supports health. On a personal note, I’ve always loved the Chicken Soup for the Soul book and the sentiment it conveys. Whether meat-friendly, plant-based, seafood-rich, or a humble seven-bean soup, there’s room for them all.

A well-built soup can be a complete meal: protein, healthy fats, complex carbohydrates, vegetables, herbs, and spices—all in one bowl

And let’s be honest, there are days when a salad feels like too much commitment. Soup, on the other hand, shows up without judgment. It doesn’t ask you to chop perfectly, measure precisely, or stand at the stove stirring with intention. It simply says, “Put me in a pot, walk away, and come back to enjoy.”

That’s why soup isn’t just food, it’s a strategy. Especially in our Dynamic Decades, when we’re thinking more intentionally about digestion, energy, hydration, and nourishment that support how our bodies are changing. A well-built soup can be a complete meal: protein, healthy fats, complex carbohydrates, vegetables, herbs, and spices—all in one bowl. No food rules. No complicated instructions. Just nourishment that works…and is delicious!

Soup also understands busy weeks. Making a double batch is effortless, and suddenly lunch and dinner are handled for days without a second thought. And if you’re thinking ahead (or cooking while motivation strikes), soup is one of the best freezer-friendly meals there is. I’m a fan of freezer bags. I fill them, lie them flat, and suddenly you’ve saved space and future-you time. Just be sure to label them… because “mystery soup” is rarely as appealing as it sounds.

Hydration also becomes increasingly important as we age, yet many of us don’t feel as thirsty as we once did. Broth-based soups offer a delicious solution. Made with high–water–content vegetables like celery, zucchini, tomatoes, leafy greens, and squash, the soup quietly contributes to daily hydration while delivering minerals, electrolytes, and nourishment in a form the body readily absorbs. It’s hydration you don’t have to think about… You get to enjoy!

Gentle on the gut, generous with vegetables, forgiving with ingredients, and kind to both your time and your budget, soup quietly checks all the boxes. Whether it’s simmering all day in a crockpot, bubbling on the stove, or doing its magic in an Instant Pot, soup allows you to live your life while dinner takes care of itself. And then there’s the aroma. Few things fill a kitchen like the slow cooking of soup; warm, familiar, and quietly reassuring. It has a way of wrapping the space in comfort, reminding us that nourishment isn’t just about what’s in the bowl but also how it makes us feel as it’s being made.

So, let’s talk about SOUPer meals, why they’re one of the most underrated, supportive, and satisfying ways to nourish yourself in this season of life… and why one pot might be doing more for your health than you think!
